PRESCRIBING REGULATED PLANT-BASED MEDICINES
In Australia, where alternative medications are yet to receive widespread formal approval, physicians must utilize the Therapeutic Goods Administration's (TGA) Special Access Scheme (SAS) to prescribe these treatments. The two primary pathways under this scheme are:
SAS Category B: The standard route for accessing alternative-based medications.
Authorised Prescriber Status: Suitable for practitioners with experience in SAS Category B submissions who are prepared to prescribe more regularly.
Contrary to common perceptions, the process for obtaining approval to prescribe medicinal cannabis has become more streamlined. The TGA has enhanced its Online Portal to support a more efficient workflow, enabling simultaneous submission of applications to the TGA and, where required, to State Health departments.
The regulatory pathways are the Authorised Prescriber Standard Pathway and the Special Access Scheme Category B (SAS-B).
